Without a Bondsman - When the Judicial System sets a Bond for a Defendant the total Bond amount must be paid to the Court in order for the defendant to be released from incarceration.  Example:  if the Bond is set at $5,000 then $5,000 must be paid to the Court in order for the defendant to be released.

With a Bondsman - When a Surety Broker is used 10% (State Charge) -15% (Federal Charge) of the bond amount is paid to the Surety Broker and this is non-refundable.  There must also be collateral enough to cover the whole bond amount.  Example:  if the Bond is set at $5,000 then the Bondsman would be paid $500 (State Charge) or $750 (Federal Charge) along with the temporary holding of $5,000 worth of collateral such as a Car Title.  When the defendant’s case is resolved the Car Title will be returned.
